We can’t stop talking about all the wonderful things that vitamin C can do for you and your skin. Not only is it great for all skin types, specifically for anti-aging and acne, it’s also a wonderful antioxidant that helps fight free-radical damage. It also works to treat hyperpigmentation as well as rebuilds capillaries. Not only that, but it can help hydrate your hair and regulate your weight. See, now you know why we are such big fans. But what’s the best way to get your dose of this super vitamin? That was one NewBeauty reader’s question:

On our Facebook page, Cathy asks, “Does it help to take the Vitamin C tablets orally?”

“When it comes to getting the anti-aging benefits of vitamin C, topical application is best,” says San Antonio dermatologist Vivian Bucay, MD. “Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen formation, thus improving the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin C also replenishes vitamin E, which plays an even more important role as an antioxidant as it works on cell membranes. Finally, vitamin C also plays a role in melanin synthesis, and topically applied vitamin C can help even out skin tone and fade brown spots.”

Since you’ll get the most skin-care benefits out of applying it topically, watch this handy video to know what type of vitamin C to look for.

As for applying it, vitamin C can be used either at night or in the morning, says Los Angeles celebrity aesthetician, Gina Marí. “What I tell my clients is after you cleanse and tone your skin, apply the vitamin C serum and a really nice moisturizer on top.” If you’re using it in the morning, just make sure that your moisturizer contains SPF.
