“When it comes to getting the anti-aging benefits of vitamin C, topical application is best,” says San Antonio dermatologist Vivian Bucay, MD. “Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen formation, thus improving the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin C also replenishes vitamin E, which plays an even more important role as an antioxidant as it works on cell membranes. Finally, vitamin C also plays a role in melanin synthesis, and topically applied vitamin C can help even out skin tone and fade brown spots.”

As for applying it, vitamin C can be used either at night or in the morning, says Los Angeles celebrity aesthetician, Gina Marí. “What I tell my clients is after you cleanse and tone your skin, apply the vitamin C serum and a really nice moisturizer on top.” If you’re using it in the morning, just make sure that your moisturizer contains SPF.
