You know your own beauty issues better than anyone else. That’s why, every week we take your questions from our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and reach out to experts in the beauty industry to get you the answers you need. This week, one of our Facebook followers asked, “How do you combat excessive dryness?” We asked Southern California dermatologist Dr. Tony Nakhla to provide us with some answers.
In order to get relief from dry skin, you first need to establish the causes behind it. Cold or dry weather is a major culprit, but your career can also cause your skin to dry out. For example, health professionals and artists have positions where they wash their hands many times throughout the day. “The key is not to use so much water,” says Dr. Nahkla. “Decrease the number of times you wash your hands and use hand sanitizer instead.”
Another tip: Avoid taking long, hot showers or baths. Instead, take a quick bath and apply moisturizer immediately. And we mean immediately. Dr. Nakhla says that once you step out of the shower, you have about three minutes to dry off your body and apply moisturizer before your skin starts to dry out.
You can also add things to your diet like fish oil and whole grains, as well as supplements like biotin and gamalinolenic acid. All of these nutrients are needed for your skin cells to retain moisture.
