According to San Diego, CA, plastic surgeon Joseph Grzeskiewicz, MD, the health and goals of prospective breast augmentation patients are more important considerations than age. “Some of my 40- to 60-year-old patients are actually better candidates for surgery than those in their 20s!” he says.
“Breast augmentation of women in their late 40s or older is not at all uncommon,” says New York plastic surgeon David P. Rapaport, MD. “Many women who have had children and experienced subsequent loss of breast volume are interested in breast enhancement at this age. Because these patients have frequently had fluctuations in breast volume from pregnancy, nursing and weight changes, sometimes the enhancement is performed together with a lift. In any case, as long as the patient is in good health, there is no problem performing the operation on older patients.”
Oxnard, CA, plastic surgeon Yuly Gorodisky, MD, agrees. “I perform many “Mommy Makeovers” and breast augmentations on patients who are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. As long as the patient is in good health, they tend to do very well with breast surgery. Some patients may benefit from a breast lift with implants, or other procedures to make them look as youthful as they feel.”
For women in their 40s or older, ensuring breast health is recommended before surgery. “It is very important that the patient be properly screened for breast cancer prior to enhancement surgery, generally with mammography and ultrasound added as needed,” says Dr. Rapaport.
However, while middle-aged women shouldn’t be dissuaded from breast augmentation surgery based on their age alone, Dr. Grzeskiewicz stresses that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommends aesthetic breast augmentation patients be at least 18 years old. He adds, “The use of silicone gel breast implants in women under the age of 22 is still controversial, and although the FDA still recommends against it, most surgeons, myself included, will address the issue on a case-by-case basis and perform the procedure if there is an indication in our medical judgment to do so. Those are the only other instances in which age is a factor in my decision to perform breast augmentation.”
