Lip injections have been around for quite some time, but a new introduction to the filler category is set to change how lips are treated. Today, Galderma launched Restylane Silk, the first FDA approved filler to treat the lip plus the surrounding area (no more smokers’ lines).

In a clinical study with 221 patients, the brand found that 98% of patients treated with Restylane Silk showed a visible improvement in the fullness of their lips 14 days after injection, 77% showed an imporvement in lip fullness 8 weeks after teratment and 59% maintained lip fullness six months after treatment.

To set the record straight, we got the lowdown from New York Dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, on how the filler works and how to get the best results when it comes to injecting lips.

Rule number one, she says, is communicating the outcome that patients can expect. “Despite seeing the aging signs around their lips and mouth, many are hesitant to seek treatment for this area—who can blame them given some of the artificial full lips seen in photos of once beautiful celebrities. Fueling this unnatural look has been the use of treatments that were not designed specifically for the area in and around the lip,” she says. And that’s where Restylane Silk comes in.

“It has been specifically designed to treat this sensitive and challenging area. It has a different particle formulation and is administered with an ultra fine needle, which improves accuracy, precision and results for a more natural result,” says Dr. Marmur. Add in the fact that Restylane Silk is a clear hyaluronic acid gel that can be injected into the tips or into areas around the mouth to restore natural youthful definition, symmetry and smooth lines.

The end result? Fuller lips that look so natural that no one will know you’ve had anything done!
