We know, wearing makeup to the gym seems like one of the biggest skin care mistakes of all time. But it turns out that there is a way to do it so that your skin won’t punish you later on. And if a little makeup motivates you to go out and exercise, why not go for it?
Celebrity makeup artist Lina Hanson says that it’s completely fine to wear makeup while working out as long as you keep it light. However, she says to skip the heavy foundation, concealer and dark eye shadow as it’s important to let your skin breath. “Wearing too much makeup while working out can cause clogged pores which can lead to breakouts.”
“For the gym, you want a really natural and pretty look,” says celebrity makeup artist Aura Schwartz. All you really need to wear is a tinted moisturizer, some waterproof mascara and a tinted lip balm. One tinted moisturizer she likes to use is Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 ($42). And for someone with oily skin, she says to use a mineral powder like Josie Maran Pressed Powder ($30). But be careful not to use too much because it can clog your pores.
If your workout takes you outside, it’s really important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin. Schwartz says Peter Thomas Roth makes great sunscreens to wear underneath your makeup. And while it’s best to wash your face right after heavy sweating, if you’re pressed for time, use blotting paper to get rid of the excess oils.
