Bold lipstick is a great way to look fabulous if you’re in a hurry, but if you have fine lines or wrinkles around your lips it can create a less-than-perfect look. On our Facebook page, Shirley asked for ways to make those unwanted lip lines disappear. To answer her question, we reached out to our experts to find out!
Rancho Mirage, CA, dermatologist Wendy Roberts, MD, told us that in addition to sun damage, pollution and other factors that age us, lines around the lip can also form from repetitive movements of the small lip muscles. For example, smoking and frequently drinking through straws can cause wrinkles around the lips because the pursing motion gradually breaks down the collagen that plumps up your lips.
The best way to prevent these lines is to limit smoking and alcohol intake because they both can speed up the aging process. Another tip is to use skin-care products that contain antioxidants in addition to SPF.
“If you see that they are occurring then be proactive because they will continue unless you intervene,” says Dr. Roberts. Some techniques she recommends to treat these rhytids, or lines, are dermal fillers, neurotoxins such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, as well as fractional laser resurfacing.
Eugene, OR, plastic surgeon Mark E. Jewell, MD, says fillers often produce great results when used around the lips and nasolabial lines. Most patients tend to see some results about a week after using one of these treatments, and full results usually come after four weeks. However, keep in mind that you may need a series of treatments for deeper lines. For the best results, contact a board-certified doctor to come up with a plan that’s right for you.
