Good news for people still haunted by the acne of their past. The manufacturer of the derma filler Artefill, Suneva Medical, is preparing to enroll 150 patients throughout 10 centers in the U.S. starting in February in a study to determine the effectiveness of Artefill for treating acne scars. Artefill is a FDA approved permanent filler to treat nasolabial folds, or smile lines, but now it might be a permanent option for acne scar-sufferers, says study investigator and Los Angeles dermatologist Ava Shamban, MD.

Artefill contains bovine collagen, microspheres and lidocaine, and the wrinkle-reducing effects are immediate and can be seen for up to five years. Since it’s a permanent filler, it doesn’t absorb into the body like temporary fillers, and can only be removed surgically.

Suneva Medical is hopeful that Artefill will prove to be helpful for the millions of people affected with unsightly acne scars for which there are few truly effective treatments. “Acne scars are an ideal indication for a long lasting or permanent injection as they are a defect. That is not resolved with either laser or topical therapy. In addition, acne scars are difficult to cover with makeup and require re-volumization to obliterate them,” says Shamban.

Do you suffer from acne scars? Would you be willing to try a permanent filler to erase them?
