Hair growth tapers off as we age because “the hair grows out of the follicle slower, and each strand tends to become thinner as time passes,” says New York hair-color specialist Beth Minardi. “Hair that was once as broad as a piece of yarn is now like a string of thread.”

Just because you’re over the age of 40 doesn’t mean you can’t wear long hair. In fact, you can, as long as it is cut appropriately. “Many women still believe that older women should wear only short hair, but, no matter what age you are, you can look stunning with long locks,” says New York celebrity hairstylist Riccardo Maggiore. “As long as your hair is in good condition and a long style is flattering to your face, there is no reason you can’t wear longer locks.”
