Removing makeup at the end of the day is essential to keeping blemishes and breakouts at bay, but how you go about doing so is just as important. To find out if you’re removing your makeup the right way, we turned to Lori Taylor-Davis, global pro lead artist for Smashbox Cosmetics, for her three best tips and tricks.

Don’t Use Water and Soap
Unfortunately these basic products don’t get the job done as well as a makeup remover. “Women try to use soap and water, which is not good to remove makeup, especially waterproof makeup,” Taylor-Davis explains. “Something like our That’s a Wrap! Makeup Remover ($20) is great to remove makeup before starting the cleansing process.”

Oil-Based Makeup Removers Are the Way to Go
“Makeup does not stand a chance against oil-based makeup removers, so I love using this method to efficiently remove stubborn, long-wearing formulations easily,” says Taylor-Davis. We like Nourishing Cleansing Oil from Skin Laundry ($35), which moisturizes skin while it effectively removes makeup.

Use a Cleansing Tool
To make sure your skin gets really clean, Taylor-Davis suggests using a cleansing tool along with your makeup remover. You can go with a cleansing brush, like the Clarisonic Cleansing System Mia 3 ($159), that has dual-layer bristles that gently get rid of makeup and other impurities. Another option is Taylor-Davis’s beauty favorite: baby wipes. “I love using a baby wipe soaked in makeup remover to help assist in the removal process!”
