If you’re in need of a makeover, a quick way to give yourself a fresh new look is to change your hair color. And with a new season just around the corner, what better time is there than now? The color to go for: deep, fiery red. Influential celebrities like Drew Barrymore and Florence Welch are already sporting the bright hue which will be a big trend this spring.
That’s why I decided to take the plunge. My original hair color (picture on the left) was a strawberry blonde color, so with Christina Hendricks’ vixen-like character, Joan Holloway, from Mad Men in mind, I went in for an appointment with celebrity hair colorist George Papanikolas at the Andy LeCompte Salon in West Hollywood. After all, who better to trust my precious hair with than someone who has actually worked with Christina Hendricks in the past, right?
His advice on going red: “Everyone can go red in certain variations,” says Papanikolas. “But it tends to look best on women with ivory skin and freckles. Those with olive or dark skin tones should try to avoid it.” He also noted that going red is a commitment because it fades faster than every other hair color. To maintain it, he recommends a touch-up every four to six weeks, along with a gloss treatment every three to four weeks.
Still, I went for it and I love it. The color makes my blue eyes look bluer and my skin more rosy. One of my friends even says it makes me look a little more sophisticated. And, to be honest, with so many people complimenting me on my hair lately, it’s a complete confidence booster too.
