Have you recently switched foundation, mascara or any other cosmetic, only to be faced with breakouts? The redness and bumps may not be acne-it could be an allergy.

During the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, experts discussed how more than 20% of people patch-tested for cosmetic allergies experienced an allergic reaction, ranging from itching and inflammation to blisters and dryness.

“It’s well known that our everyday cosmetic products contain many substances that cause allergies,” Luz Fonacier, MD ACAAI, told her fellow allergists at the meeting. “Although the cosmetic industry is one of the largest in the world, it is not highly regulated in the U.S. The average person uses 12 personal products a day. Those 12 products may contain up to 168 chemicals, many of which can be an irritant or a substance that causes an allergic reaction.”

Of those many chemicals, it’s fragrances and preservatives that tend to cause allergic reactions most often.

Beauty products aren’t the only things that could be irritating your skin. Some people are allergic to their own tattoos!

“Allergic reactions from tattoos come mainly from the pigments used to color the dye,” said Dr. Fonacier explained.

If you believe you’re experiencing allergies to your makeup, skincare or tattoos, visit your dermatologist or an allergist.
