Does anyone actually do those recommended patch tests with at-home hair-coloring kits 24 hours before treating their hair? Most don’t-some of us here at NewBeauty are guilty-but unfortunately, those tests appear to be more important than ever.
European studies reveal that hair-dye allergies, which can cause dermatitis and swelling, are notably increasing. One London clinic found that dye-induced allergies have doubled over the last decade, affecting more than seven percent of its patients.
Experts blame paraphenylenediamine (also called p-phenylenediamine or PPD). This compound is found in most hair products sold in the US, but has already been banned in France, Germany and Sweden because of its link to rising reactions-some bad enough to cause scarring.
PPD doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon, so with the number of people dyeing their hair and the age range of dyers broadening, allergic reactions are expected to continue increasing. However, you can avoid being the next allergy-sufferer by following the patch test instructions that come with your chosen box of hair color.
