Whether your skin care regimen involves 10 steps or two, you expect results from the products you use. Ampoules—small vials of highly concentrated formulas that target specific skin concerns—deliver potent active ingredients to your skin over a specific course of time (think seven days, two weeks, etc.). Although they’ve been big in places like Europe and Asia for years (so they’re not necessarily new to the skin care world), they haven’t had their 15 minutes of fame in the U.S. just yet, but that’s about to change.
So what makes them worthy of a spot in your routine? “Ampoules offer the opportunity for all skin types to quickly and effectively treat a skin crisis by intensely targeting a specific and acute skin concern like aging skin, lack of moisture, stress and blemishes,” says Sandra Friedli, national trainer for Sothys, which is launching a line of ampoules in September. “They are used professionally during European facials to give the most powerful instant results possible. The selection of ampoule is customized to the guest’s skin type and specific needs on that day. When used at home, ampoules offer a lightweight, quick-to-absorb treatment that is easily incorporated into an existing skin care regimen to boost the results of the daily products used. They’re also typically designed for short-term use, like a seven or 14 days, which appeals to a younger demographic.”

You may be thinking, how are they different from your standard serum? The difference is that ampoules contain higher concentrations of active ingredients, which experts say can produce noticeable effects more quickly. They also offer a targeted approach to one key concern, like brightening, versus a multi-pronged approach that targets many concerns at once, which is what many serums do.
“Consumers have high expectations when purchasing skin care products today and expect results, fast,” says Benjamin Simpson, senior vice president of marketing for Babor, which manufactures more than 20 million ampoules each year. “Our Babor Ampoule Concentrates undergo a sophisticated manufacturing process. Immediately before filling, the ampoules are heated to over 1,800 degrees. During the filling process, they are kept sterile, and immediately after filling, they are sealed air-tight. This ensures these high-tech active ingredients, which are sourced from nature, are protected until opening and application.”

One part of the world that’s seen a big boost in ampoule sales is Asia. “The use of ampoules in Asia has been popular for many years and has recently seen tremendous growth thanks to the trend of multi-layering,” says Friedli. “A 10-step skin care regimen is a very common twice-daily routine in Asia. All products work in synergy to get the best concentration and penetration of ingredients.
Therefore, the ampoules are hero products considering that you can use them as a cure and change to another one according to your concern as soon as the previous one is done. Later this year, will see the popularity of ampoules surge in the U.S. market as we enter the fall-winter season, and growth will continue into 2017.”
