Working as beauty professional for the last 15 years, I’d have to admit I’ve become quite spoiled. Working on set or at a shoot, the product companies are usually generous. As a result, we artists usually leave for home with bags full of goodies.
Long gone are the days when I had to settle for Maybelline and Aqua Net. Don’t get me wrong, as a New Jersey native, eyeliner and hairspray were a major priority in my life. However, as I matured so did my taste. I learned that there was an entire world filled with products that address your every need and desire. In my case, my desire has pretty much always been the same. I just want my hair to hold a darn curl!
I was told I was weighing it down, drying it out, heating it too much or not teasing it enough. In the process, I learned about volumizing shampoo, leave in conditioner, gels, mousses and hair sprays with price tags upwards of $30. Let’s not forget the $200 curling iron that promised to change my life. Some worked fine, some better than others, but I always continued searching for a magic potion.
Then, recently I was back in good old New Jersey. While getting ready for a parade I was attending with my family, I realized that I had neglected to pack virtually all of my hair products. It was looking as though I was going to have to rough it when I found a lovely sulfate-free shampoo in my mom’s shower. I thought I was in the clear when I reached for the hairspray and pulled out (gasp) Aqua Net.
Oh well, what’s a girl to do? Beggars can’t be choosers. I sprayed away and was off to a windy Saturday afternoon outdoors. After that I was not looking forward to seeing my reflection in the mirror. When I finally did what did I see? Curly hair! Hair that held it’s style all day outside and was still holding it at dinnertime. Oh Aqua Net, can you ever forgive me? I made it all so complicated. I kept looking for something better when all I needed was you.
