Laser options for cosmetic purposes, which at one time were limited, are now seemingly countless. Recently, Syneron, the makers of VelaShape, introduced Matrix RF, a non-laser, non-light-based device that is said to deliver results similar to that of ablative and fractional resurfacing lasers.
Matrix RF, which, unlike traditional lasers, can be used on all skin colors and types, uses customizable radiofrequency energy to resurface and tighten skin and stimulate collagen production. The most aggressive level, which gives a tolerable but not pain-free zap, is ideal for getting deep within the dermis to reduce pore size and tighten skin. The lighter level is beneficial for hyperpigmentation, fine lines and superficial wrinkles.
The three levels your doctor can choose from, based on your desired results and downtime, are:
- Level A: similar to a micro laser peel with little to no downtime.
- Level B: the equivalent of a fractionated erbium laser, with two to three days of downtime.
- Level C: offers results similar to those seen with a fractionated CO2 laser, with four or five days of recovery.
Matrix RF is best for addressing mild to moderate wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and lax skin on the face, neck and chest. Similar to fractional resurfacing lasers, it creates a skin injury in a customized pattern to stimulate new collagen. The tip has a grid with microscopic pinpoints, so keep in mind that you will see the marks of the grid for a few days post-treatment, and they will scab and fall off. However, unlike CO2 lasers, you won’t have to deal with bleeding and oozing.
