Just before typing this, I was holding in my humble hands what’s currently considered the holy grail of haircare. I think I’ll pick it up again … ah, nice. If you’re already in-the-know, you may have guessed-and guessed correctly-that I’m in the company of Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil, from the Shu Uemura Art of Hair collection. If not, let me tell you about this coveted concoction.
It’s not so much that Essence Absolue is expensive-$65, which is pricey for a hair product, but not even half the price of Shu Uemura’s most expensive skincare product. It’s that this amazing oil is sold out worldwide. Even as an editor, I had to wait longer than usual for the sample that now sits before me, and even though it’s in a plastic bottle, I’m handling it like a Fabergé egg.
The reason Essence Absolue is impossible to find is simple: it’s awesome. Specifically, the multitasking formula acts as an antidote for dry hair, due largely to camellia oil. Inspired by beauty of Geisha hair, it can be used to enhance suffering strands in several ways: as a pre-shampoo treatment, as a leave-in conditioner, as sun shield, as a shine serum, and as a supplement to color application.
Regularly used on celebrity strands-that is, when they can get it-Essence Absolue deeply moisturizes and ups hair’s elasticity. It takes only a couple pumps to start changing how hair looks and behaves. But as you’ll see from the waiting list sign-up on the official website, it also takes patience.
And no, you can’t have mine.
