Think they key to staying age-less lies in lotions, potions and a little nip and tuck here and there? Well, according to some preliminary research, the secret to staying young might very well be right inside our own cells. Scientists have discovered that when a particular group of mitochondrial proteins, referred to as MTC proteins, are missing from the cell, other protein groups stabilize the genome, possibly off-setting age-related diseases and increasing the organism’s lifespan.
The function of the mitochondria is essential to our existence-they provide power to the cells, which in turn gives us energy. One theoretical drawback is that they also play a significant role in the aging process. It is believed that while providing energy to cells, the mitochondria also produce oxyradicals, which can damage cell components, eventually causing the organism to age.
The study revealed that MTC proteins play a significant role in the cell’s stability and ability to remove damaged proteins. While there is more research to be done before definitive conclusions can be drawn, the study indicated that the corresponding relationship between mitochondria and the aging process is worth further investigation.
