Considering bold brows have been on-trend for years now, it’s no surprise microblading is one of the hottest treatments of the moment. Most women leave their session with thick, full brows. However, one Detroit woman left with an infection that sent her to the hospital for three days.

“Jennifer” told her local Detroit news outlet that she left the appointment feeling happy and satisfied with the results. The days following though she started to see her brows getting redder. It wasn’t until little lumps started showing up a few days later that she became concerned. Once she started experiencing pain and swelling, she went to urgent care.

At urgent care, doctors diagnosed her with cellulites, gave her antibiotics and sent her home. However, the symptoms continued to worsen so she took herself back to the emergency room and spent the next three days there on antibiotics and steroids.

“I was terrified,” she told WDIV. “My face is swelling up. My eyes are closing. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen.’”

After she was released from the hospital, she continued seeing a dermatologist for treatment.

Typically, microblading is safe as long as it’s done in sterile conditions. “As with any procedure that involves going through the skin (such as tattooing, piercing, even extractions), it’s important that the skin be thoroughly prepped to remove all harmful microorganisms,” explains San Antonio, TX, dermatologist, Vivian Bucay, MD. She explains that instruments and pigment should be sterile and hands thoroughly cleaned before putting on disposable gloves. “Failure to follow these steps increases the risk of infection.”

Before you decide to give microblading a go, just be sure to do your research so that you know the technicians are trained and licensed and the salon is clean and safe.
