The alkaline diet is one of the most popular diets to hit the wellness scene over the past few years—and even has the celebrity support to back it up. Kate Hudson and Jennifer Aniston both used to be major fans of the eating regimen, however, recent news has people rethinking the nutrition trend. It turns out, the “doctor” who created the diet is now facing some major jail time, and has had some pretty serious allegations brought up against him.

The creator of the alkaline diet, Robert Young, wrote the book “The pH Miracle” back in 2010, explaining the premise of his diet as the idea that specific foods can cause your body’s pH levels to become acidic and bring forth health issues. Young quickly gained a celebrity following, with Victoria Beckham even tweeting out a photo of an alkaline diet cookbook and Kate Hudson promoting the lifestyle choice in her recently published book.

Much to the surprise of his famous following, Young was convicted of practicing medicine without a license in 2016. It turns out, the doctorate he claimed to have earned was actually from a non-accredited correspondence school that was churning out fake degrees, the BBC reports. Additionally, charges were brought upon him for allegedly conning terminally ill cancer patients out of thousands of dollars, promising to rid them of their disease through an intensive alkaline diet program at his California-based “pH Miracle Ranch.”

A recent BBC report profiled one of Young’s patients from 2012, saying that she paid Young more than $77,000 for a stay at his ranch in order to be cured of her cancer. However, instead of treating her with customary medicinal treatments that could have saved her life, she received infusions of baking-soda that offered no benefits to the sick woman. The 27-year-old patient died after three months of following Young’s treatment plan at his ranch.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Robert Young now faces up to three years in prison for practicing medicine without a license, and will undergo a retrial for his fraudulent actions that occurred at his San Diego health center.

“I don’t have remorse because of the thousands, if not millions, of people that have been helped through the [alkaline diet] programme,” Young said when asked by BBC if he felt remorse. We’ll update with Young’s sentencing once it’s been announced.
