The gold-standard ingredient in skin care, retinol (a derivative of vitamin A) is beloved by dermatologists for many reasons. It was first used to treat acne back in the ’70s, and became a go-to for targeting signs of aging a decade later. And since then, skin-care pros have sang its praises. Whether you rely on it for keeping acne-prone skin clear or smoothing fine lines, it’s an ingredient not to skip if you can use it (and tolerate it). Lately, I’ve been on the Alastin Renewal Retinol bandwagon, which has been recommended to me dozens of times. Here’s my honest review.
The Benefits of This Retinol Serum
As is the case with most retinol serums, there are different strengths depending on what your skin can handle. If you are new to the ingredient or have sensitive skin, ease your way in. This formula is offered in both a 0.25-percent strength and a 0.5-percent strength. I started with the 0.25, using it three times a week at first. After two weeks, I added another night. Eventually, I was able to use it six nights a week, and that’s when I graduated to the 0.5.
So what makes this particular formula so special? The retinol is encapsulated in solid lipid molecules, which improves the delivery of the retinol into the skin. The brand tells me this patented delivery system also supports the skin’s natural ability to produce collagen. Together, this leads to smoother, less-visible lines and wrinkles, and a more even skin tone. The brand also added oat extract and silver mushroom, which lend soothing properties. In fact, silver mushroom is more hydrating than hyaluronic acid for the skin, and the hydration counteracts dryness (a potential side effect of retinol). Overall, the formula is really well-balanced to reduce the potential for irritation, which is common with vitamin A derivatives.

How to Use It
At night, after cleansing your skin and applying any other serums (like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C), apply one pump to your face. Avoid your eye area. Start using it two or three times a week and work your way up to every night if your skin allows it. If you use one pump every night, the bottle will last you about four and a half months. If you’re having trouble getting the serum out when you use it the first time, the bottle may need to be primed. Turn it upside down and give it a few firm pats (like you would a condiment bottle). Then press the pump until the serum comes out.
