Aesthetic Gynecology?

A new group of providers has cropped up, and the services these gynecologists are performing have nothing to do with the female reproductive anatomy.

While the question of whether a gynecologist is qualified to administer Botox or perform liposuction is hotly debated and often deemed a “turf battle,” consumers should look specifically to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to find out if the services you are offered by a gynecologist are within the scope of his or her practice.

There are no journal articles on Botox or liposuction in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, or for that matter on any procedures that are dermatologic or cosmetic in nature that deal with the female reproductive anatomy. The ACOG holds no symposia on cosmetic procedures that are not gynecologic in nature, and it includes no courses in their annual meetings on cosmetic procedures. In fact, the ACOG holds the position that aesthetics are not within its purview.

Translation: If the Academy does not believe these procedures are within the scope of gynecology, they don’t belong within the scope of a gynecologist’s practice.
