While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all cure for acne, there are definitely steps you can take to reduce it. That’s why dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology put together these top acne-fighting tips and we found them to be quite helpful. Here they are:
- Aim to wash your face at least twice a day (once in the morning, once at night), and don’t forget to wash after you work out because perspiration tends to make acne worse.
- Choose a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and apply it with your fingertips. Avoid using washcloths or sponges that can irritate the skin.
- Avoid products that contain alcohol or any other product that can irritate your skin like astringents, toners and exfoliants.
- Though you may be tempted, do not scrub your skin as this can make acne worse.
- Try to limit the amount of times you touch your face throughout the day to prevent flare-ups.
- Use lukewarm water when you rinse your face.
- Do not pick, pop or squeeze your pimples. It will only drag the healing process out and increase the risk of scarring.
Another tip that wasn’t on the list: Keep in mind that your cellphone is covered with bacteria. For that reason, try not to put it near your face or wipe it down at least once a day with an antibacterial wipe.
Of course, the best way to treat your acne treatment is to consult a board-certified dermatologist—especially if it makes you shy or embarrassed, if your current products aren’t working and if your acne is scarring or darkening your skin.
