While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all cure for acne, there are definitely steps you can take to reduce it. That’s why dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology put together these top acne-fighting tips and we found them to be quite helpful. Here they are:

  1. Aim to wash your face at least twice a day (once in the morning, once at night), and don’t forget to wash after you work out because perspiration tends to make acne worse.
  2. Choose a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and apply it with your fingertips. Avoid using washcloths or sponges that can irritate the skin.
  3.  Avoid products that contain alcohol or any other product that can irritate your skin like astringents, toners and exfoliants.
  4.  Though you may be tempted, do not scrub your skin as this can make acne worse.
  5.  Try to limit the amount of times you touch your face throughout the day to prevent flare-ups.
  6.  Use lukewarm water when you rinse your face.
  7.  Do not pick, pop or squeeze your pimples. It will only drag the healing process out and increase the risk of scarring. 

Another tip that wasn’t on the list: Keep in mind that your cellphone is covered with bacteria. For that reason, try not to put it near your face or wipe it down at least once a day with an antibacterial wipe.

Of course, the best way to treat your acne treatment is to consult a board-certified dermatologist—especially if it makes you shy or embarrassed, if your current products aren’t working and if your acne is scarring or darkening your skin.
