In women, the more feminine that the nose looks, the more balanced the face appears. But some noses possess characteristics that seem fitting for a male face—not a female.
If the nose is too wide, too bulbous, too flat or if the tip points downward too much, among other things, the nose can look as if it is too masculine simply because it appears too prominent and throws off facial balance. And, if your chin is small or weak it can cause the nose to look even less feminine. An aesthetically pleasing female nose has a refined tip that tilts upward ever so slightly and a straight or somewhat concave bridge. When the nose lacks these characteristics, it appears that it should be on the face of a male since they tend to have larger noses that match their larger bone structure. That’s where a nose job comes in.
Your plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon can feminize your nose by raising up the width of the bridge and lengthening the nose, giving a once masculine looking nose more feminine qualities. “The nose needs to be shortened and the tip lifted, making it smaller,” says Chicago plastic surgeon Julius Few, MD. For those that need just the tip addressed, a tip plasty can be done. Cartilage may need to be added, which most doctors feel is the best option because it’s natural, biological and works better to reshape the existing framework but that’s not to say that implants don’t have their place. “Silicone implants can work and often will. But, if there is a problem with the implant it is almost always due to some sort of damage to the soft tissue that may be difficult to correct or be uncorrectable,” says Oakland, CA, plastic surgeon Ronald Gruber, MD. Simply narrowing a wide tip can create a softer, more feminine overall look.
