Normally, I steer clear of night creams. They’re usually too heavy for my seriously combination skin (as in-gasp-budding wrinkles, and yet acne that would better suit a teenager). Plus, I have this archaic cold-cream-housewife perception of them that I cannot shake-like if I use one, it’ll be a huge step backwards for women’s lib, not to mention a huge step backwards for my pores.
Obviously, these notions are wildly inaccurate. I understand that I live in 2009, and that there are a number of night treatments that do not involve a mask the color of a radioactive avocado. I’m also aware that my skin could use some extra help at night. A night cream doesn’t have to be a goopy, creepy colloid like you’re being fitted for a wax molding and need to breathe through a straw. In fact, most of them aren’t. Certainly no straws are needed.
My evening skin regimen consisted of washing my face, followed by an anti-acne gel, and maybe a light spritz of toner. No big whoop. Which became the problem-my skin was being dried out, and my complexion in the morning usually looked more tired than I was. So I tried Swissclinical Night Repair Cream one night, and just prayed that I wouldn’t wake up with cystic acne on my chin.
Swissclinical is a Swiss line (surprise!) that bills itself as cosmeceutical-that is, at the intersection of dermatology and cosmetology. Everything in the line is allergen- and mineral-oil-free, which is good for sensitive or combination skin types like mine. The night cream has coenzyme Q10, a great moisturizer and age-fighter, plus a carsonine complex, which gives a “Botox effect,” for which I can personally vouch.
My skin the next morning felt smoother and more taut, but not at all stiff and dried out. After several nights of consistent use, my skin had evened out in tone and the teeny creases around my eyes and cheeks had smoothed out considerably. And I didn’t have any breakouts, either. Let’s hear it for progress!
