We’re always hearing about the next exotic superfood that is really beneficial. It typically comes from a region we’ve never visited and has a name that we have to examine the phonetic spelling of before daring to say aloud. This is all intriguing-until we go to the supermarket and realize it’s next to impossible to find. So it’s refreshing when we learn about a super fruit that is readily available. The benefits of tart cherries were touted in a series of studies done by researchers at the University of Michigan, University of Arizona and Brunswick labs.
The three studies all examined the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of tart cherries and discovered that they contain diverse antioxidant compounds and phytochemicals, reduce inflammation markers and lower cholesterol levels. One of the studies suggested tart cherries could be linked to improved cardiovascular health. Mice used in that study had a 65 percent reduction in early death.
Since recent research has linked so many different diseases to inflammation, the more anti-inflammatory foods we add to our diets the better.
