When eaten, this bright orange, antioxidant rich spice contains a substance called curcurim that studies have shown do everything from fend off free radicals to inhibit cancer cell growth. “It’s one of the highest antioxidant spices out there,” says registered dietician Dawn Jackson Blatner. “In addition to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s also a natural liver detoxifier,” adds celebrity nutritionist David Allen.
When applied topically, turmeric may help reduce redness and inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties. “Research has shown that turmeric is also effective as an antimicrobial and antiseptic substance that can reduce blemishes,” says Mandy Epley of Jillian Wright Clinical Spa in New York.
