It looks like one of the Real Housewives of New York City has been studying the guide in the back of every issue of NewBeauty!
On a recent episode of the Bravo reality show, Ramona Singer accompanies her friend Sonja Morgan to a plastic surgery consultation, and asks all the recommended questions: if the doctor has hospital privileges, if and when he was board-certified, if he’s a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, etc.
When the ASAPS caught the episode, they immediately applauded Ramona’s unsparing interrogation, and so do we! Here’s what this invitation-only organization advocates asking.
•Is he or she a member of the ASAPS?
Membership means that a doctor is not only certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery but also has significant experience in the field.
•What is his or her facility accreditation?
Plastic surgery can be safely performed in a hospital, a surgical center or an office-based surgical facility. All ASAPS surgeons operate in accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified facilities.
•What are his or her hospital privileges?
Before giving a surgeon operating privileges, a hospital review committee evaluates his or her training and competency. Your chosen surgeon should have operating privileges in an accredited hospital for the procedure you’re considering.
Furthermore, the ASAPS recommends verifying board-certification with the ABPS.
