A Perfectly Asymmetrical Smile

When it comes to beauty and perfection, we hear a lot about the importance of facial symmetry and balanced proportions. And according to Merriam-Webster, the very definition of symmetry entails “beauty of form arising from balanced proportions.” But in reality, symmetry, in terms of facial aesthetics, may not only be unrealistic, it may also be unnatural—especially when it comes to your smile.

Atlanta cosmetic dentist Ronald Goldstein, DDS explains, “First off, no one is perfectly symmetrical, nor is there such a thing as a perfectly symmetrical face. There are huge numbers of patients who seek a ‘perfect smile’ from cosmetic dentists. But the fact is that the norm for humans is an asymmetrical smile. This may consist of lip irregularities and various forms of asymmetry to the arrangements of teeth and even the teeth themselves.

While many patients seek treatments to make their smiles more symmetrical, thinking that is more attractive, it’s simply not the case. Dr. Goldstein reveals that when giving lectures on the subject of symmetry and the smile, he presents audiences with famous celebrity faces as symmetrical and asymmetrical, and says the asymmetrical version always wins out as the most appealing. He adds, “When it comes to sex appeal, you can forget symmetry. Most of the sexiest faces in Hollywood are far from symmetrical and the same holds true for the sexiest smiles in Hollywood too!”
