Gum recontouring is a relatively easy and painless procedure for minor reshaping using a soft tissue laser. For more extensive gum recontouring, however, a new procedure has been developed which allows for reduction of excess gingival display (showing of gum tissue): surgical lip repositioning.
The procedure is suggested for patients with upper lip hypermobility, exposing an undesired amount of gums in a smile. It is not the recommended treatment of choice when other causes such as tooth malpositioning and excessive skeletal deformities are causing the excessive show of gum tissue. Treatment in these situations may involve orthodontic leveling of the gum margins or resective or orthognathic surgery.
If you are not happy with your smile because you show too much gum tissue, you should definitely research this new procedure. Ask for a referral to a periodontist experienced in this technique.
