The dermal filler market continues to expand, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Anika Therapeutics Inc.’s injectable soft-tissue filler for facial wrinkles, scar remediation and lip augmentation. Originally developed for orthopedic uses, this product is hyaluronic acid based, but what makes it different from currently approved and available hyaluronic acid fillers is that it also contains lidocaine for more comfortable injections. But Anika Therapeutics plans to make modifications to the FDA-approved product before bringing it to market, so there’s no guarantee that it will make its way into doctors’ offices-although the company anticipates marketing the product in mid-2007. Stay tuned for updates!
