In many cases, when a woman wants a breast lift, her plastic surgeon will also recommend implants to improve fullness and counteract any atrophy. However, despite attractive results, some patients are reluctant to accept the possible complications and probable future revisions that come with implants.
A Louisiana State University study recently investigated the effectiveness of fat grafting as an alternative to breast implants as a way to enhance the outcome of a breast lift. More than 40 mastopexy (breast lift) patients’ own fat was transferred from areas like their thighs or abdomens to their breasts at the time of their surgery, and researchers followed up on their results about a year later.
As presented to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the study authors found that every patient showed a significant improvement in the shape and size of their breasts, which looked and felt natural and soft. They were pleased with the fullness and cleavage that followed from this method, and concluded that fat transfer is an excellent, low-complication alternative to supplementing a breast lift with implants.
