My parents keep the brands behind as-seen-on-TV products in business. Their kitchen drawers are stocked with inventions like Mighty Putty and ShamWow, and I think they were genuinely saddened by the unexpected recent passing of uber-pitchman Billy Mays. So I wasn’t the least bit surprised when my mother purchased Smooth Away-but that didn’t stop me from teasing her over what I thought looked like a pretty feeble find.
I’ve been shaving my legs for almost 20 years, so you could say I’m pretty loyal to that method of hair removal. Smooth Away, which is essentially just a flat pad with one side covered in buffing crystals, looked too easy to be effective. My mother asked me to try it, though, and with the prejudging promise that I’d never stop shaving, I reluctantly strapped it to my hand and rolled up my jeans.
I cringed in preparation for what I expected to be a really abrasive sensation, but it was perfectly comfortable-not the least bit scratchy. That further convinced me it wouldn’t work. But after about a dozen circular motions over my shin, I lifted the Smooth Away pad to see that my stubble really had disappeared!
It’s always hard to admit when you’re wrong, especially to Mom, but I had to. Smooth Away absolutely smoothed away my stubble, gently exfoliating my skin in the process. It’ll be hard to break the shaving habit, but I definitely see myself using Smooth Away instead of a razor at least half of the time-and that means at least half of the shaving cuts (something 20 years of shaving experience can’t seem to prevent).
