You may have suspected this already, but now it has been proven: the older a woman is, the harder it is for her to stay in shape.
Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of Nottingham in the UK have found a significant difference in muscle protein synthesis between post-menopausal women and men of a similar age (65 to 80). In their study, women’s bodies were less able to react to food in order to build muscle mass, which confirms findings that show resistance exercises have less of an effect on post-menopausal women.
It’s safe to assume that hormones play a big part in this-especially the loss of estrogen. However, older women can fight this fitness setback by upping their protein intake and making foods like fish, chicken and eggs a major part of their diet.
