Approved by the FDA in 2006, Artefill is a dermal filler that is comprised of synthetic microspheres suspended in collagen. Designed to fill deeper creases and folds, doctors have long known that this filler lasts longer than collagen alone or hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm, although its FDA label still puts its longevity of results at only six months.
Artes, the company behind ArteFill, unveiled data at the American Academy of Dermatology meeting on February 2, demonstrating the filler has results that last five years. As a result, the company is expected to file for a label change to reflect this duration of results.
While ArteFill is an alternative filler for those seeking deeper correction, there are some cautions. It should not be injected in areas of movement, like the lips, and as with any particle-filler, there is potential to develop clumps or bumps beneath the skin called granulomas. A pre-allergy test is required for ArteFill, as its collagen base is animal derived.
