You’re breaking out.
Blemishes and breakouts are not always a sign you need a facial. “Breakouts and blemishes, especially around the forehead area, are often caused by elevated stress levels—and, for most of us, the holiday season can definitely be a stressful time of year,” says Randy Pierce, director of Remède Spa at The St. Regis in San Francisco.
You yelled at a complete stranger today.
“This is a telltale sign you’re stressing out,” says The Ritz-Carlton, Bali’s spa director Sofyan. Her remedy: If you can’t make it straight to the spa, indulge yourself by soaking in a pampering bubble bath.
You’re still working in the middle of your dreams.
According to Surf & Sand Resort, Aquaterra spa director, Johanna Riert, this is one she sees often. If you are still running over today’s work events in the middle of the night, or thinking about what you have to do tomorrow, it’s time to decompress.
Your ears are touching your shoulders.
Everyone has walked away from their computer after a long day feeling like their shoulders could snap off. “If your earrings are touching your shoulders because your shoulders are touching your ears, it’s time to go to the spa and get a massage,” says Jennifer Kwiatkowski-Herzog, spa director at The Forest Spa at The Lodge at Glendorn.
Your nails need more than a manicure.
Almost every spa director we spoke to registered nail biting as a big-time signal you need to go to the spa. “It’s a good sign you need to spa if you’re losing parts of your anatomy you shouldn’t be like biting off your nails or pulling out your hair,” says lead guide and program director of Mountain Trek, Kirkland Shave.
Spending time with friends has been relegated to one text emoticon a week.
Shave stands by this one, but almost every spa director we talked to said any time you need quality time with a friend or a significant other is a good time to go to the spa. “I think the top reason everyone needs to go to the spa is to reconnect, whether it’s with girlfriends that you haven’t had a Girl’s Day with in a while or with your significant other to create the spark—reconnecting with yourself is also so important,” says Jennifer Holzworth, spa director at The-Ritz Carlton, Lake Tahoe. “These days everyone is constantly connected with their electronics and has stopped listening to their body and what they really need. The spa allows that time for you to disconnect and reconnect.”

This isn’t a sign of being organized—it’s a sign you need to focus. “You know you need to go to a spa when you are stressed out and you can’t hide it, and no matter how many happy thoughts you bring up there is no resolution,” says Andréa Magalhaes, director of spa and fitness at the Waldorf Astoria Spa at El Conquistador Resort & Las Casitas Village, Waldorf Astoria Resorts in Puerto Rico. “You can’t focus, you’re yelling at strangers and one more minute on hold is going to send you over the edge.”

According to Sofyan, a headache can be a sign that you don’t have good blood circulation, which a massage can help with.
