Always Start With a Primer

Even Sonia Kashuk, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty, admits she wasn’t always on board with this one. “Initially as a makeup artist, I wasn’t a believer (I thought it was just another unnecessary step in the application process), but I’ve found that primers will really enhance your skin’s texture and give extended wear to your makeup.”

Go Rogue With Makeup Brushes

Call this the super hack from Carole Colombani, Maybelline New York Ambassador to France, who suggests using eye shadow brushes as lip brushes. “Your lipstick will turn into a perfect texture and you will discover more effect and variation with any lip product.”

Reset Your Foundation

Kashuk says that for a midday makeover, you can reset pre-applied foundation by refreshing it with a damp sponge or a light misting of Evian water. “Make sure the foundations that you’re working with are buildable and can be reapplied. When reapplying foundation, it’s always good to break it down to give it a little more luminosity for a brighter, fresher look.”

Love Layers

For long-wear cheek color, such as for a wedding or other event, don’t be afraid to layer on products. “Begin with a crème blush and slowly build up color to avoid too much intensity,” Kashuk says. “After gently powdering your face to set makeup, use a blush brush and a corresponding shade of powder blush (remember to tap of the excess product) and stroke softly over the apples of your cheeks in a circular motion.”

Polish to Perfection

“A simple, but very important step before beginning your makeup, is freshly cleansed and gently exfoliated skin,” Kashuk says. “Makeup will exaggerate any flakes or dry patches, so taking time to do this will give you a head start to a great application. Try my Resurface Gentle Exfoliating Wash to remove dead, dull skin and follow with my Radiant Boost Restorative Face Oil for thoroughly hydrated, glowing skin.”

Invest in a White Eyeliner Pencil

Lori Leib, Bodyography creative director and professional makeup artist, says one of her favorite beauty products is a white eyeliner pencil; she loves her brand’s Eye Pencil in Virgin, a bright-white soft shade. “I use white eyeliner under the brow as a highlight, in the inner corner of the eye as a highlight, on the Cupid’s bow as a highlight, around red lips to perfect the lips, on the lids as a shadow base for light shades and pastels, and to draw a shape for my black liquid liner outline.”

Don’t Leave the House Without a Lip Balm

This might be a no-brainer, but Leib says she always keeps a lip balm on hand—and she doesn’t just relegate it to the lips. “I love to use on the lids and cheekbones and under the eye area to hydrate and add a glow.”

Pink Lip Color Can Do a Crazy Amount of Things

Leib’s must-have, on-the-go product: “I never travel without a pink lipstick to apply to lips, lids and cheeks.”
