It turns out the dark circles under your eyes might not have anything to do with a lack of sleep. They can however make you look tired or appear older than you are. So how do you get rid of them? The answer lies in what really causes your dark circles-it may not be what you think.
According to New York dermatologist Neal Schultz, MD, “A lot of products out there promise to lighten [dark] circles, but in reality and unfortunately, the only thing they lighten is your wallet. The reason that [dark circles] are so difficult to treat is because they are caused by any combination of seven different problems.”
The doctor explains that there are two types of brown in the skin that cause dark circles and both can occur at two different levels of the skin-on the surface, and down deeper. There are also three types of enlarged blood vessels: purple, blue, or pink. Finally, there are two types of shadows that cause them. “One shadow comes from the bulge of fat from the lower lid as we get older and the other comes from fine wrinkling of the lower lid skin which appears as parallel lines, which when light hits them from above causes shadows just like light hitting open flat, parallel Venice blinds,” says Dr. Schultz. However only dark circles under the eyes caused by shadows can be treated with injections. Hyaluronic acid fillers are a good way to counteract these shadows and for the most dramatic difference, lower eyelid surgery can be performed.
All these reasons for under-eye circles make it extremely difficult to find the right type of treatment for the problem. That’s why visiting a dermatologist will be your best bet in determining what type of dark circles you have and your best plan of attack.
