Exfoliate
Dead skin cells can really stand in the way of how well ingredients are able to penetrate your skin. “Exfoliation will always allow other skin-care products, whether it’s a serum, treatment, moisturizer or pretty much anything else, to be absorbed more thoroughly,” says Hollywood, FL, dermatologist Gary Goldfaden.

Apply to damp skin
According to celebrity aesthetician Dangene, skin care is always more effective if your face is steamy-damp when you apply a product, as it helps drive it deeper into your skin. Celebrity aesthetician Renée Rouleau adds, “Your skin is 10 times more permeable when it’s damp.”

Store products properly
“A tray of products in your bathroom may look nice, but it’s not always so great for what’s inside the bottles,” says Rouleau. “Antioxidants and plant extracts, in particular, do better when they aren’t exposed to direct sunlight, so I suggest keeping products in a cool, dark place.”

Tweak, don’t toss
When you start to feel your routine isn’t giving you the glow you need, Prospect, KY, dermatologist Tami Buss Cassis, MD, says it may be time to modify, but don’t go overboard. “You don’t need to toss everything out, just switch out one or two products and see what happens.”

Try a treatment
While products are effective in keeping your skin looking good, most doctors will agree that it’s a good idea to get an in-office chemical peel and/or a laser treatment to help with brown spots and wrinkles and really leave skin looking its best.

Use retinoids regularly
“Having various strengths of a retinoid is important,” says Dr. Cassis. “When the weather is cold and dry, decrease the strength; when it is warm and humid, increase it. People stop using retinoids in the summer because they are in the sun more, but that’s a huge mistake.”
