If you’ve been strolling around Instagram recently, you’ve probably noticed one go-to hack step popping up in your feed: tape. From creating the perfect cat’s-eye to cleaning up powders, this tiny adhesive essential (yes, you can put it right on your skin) is stealing the spotlight and emerging as a true beauty superstar. ZYRTEC celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg shares some of her favorite ways to use it:

Detox Your Makeup
Oils, allergens and other residue can build up in your makeup palettes and cause irritation (yuck). For a mega-detox, lay a transparent, adhesive tape over your powders and then lift up to remove excess debris.

Create the Perfect Stencil
Make everyone think you are have a steady hand for applying eye makeup by using Scotch tape as a stencil. According to Greenberg, it works best when applying liquid eyeliner or dramatic, pulled-out eye shadow—and it helps create the perfect cat’s-eye. Just apply it wherever you want the line to go.

Fix Fallout
Eye shadow can land places other than your eyelid and erase everything else when you attempt to clean it up. “Lightly touch the sticky tape to remove eye shadow fallout from your face—you’ll remove the shadow, but not your foundation or blush.”

…Or Prevent It
As a preventive measure, you can also lay a little piece of tape under your eyes while applying a smoky eye.

Conquer Contouring
Greenberg says blue painters tape is great for contouring and highlighting because it’s more gentle on skin. “Try applying tape to the high points of your cheekbones and your jawline, and apply bronzing powder. Remove tape, blend, and you’re good to go!”
