From the red carpet to the everyday catwalk, Sonia Kashuk, makeup artist and founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty, specializes in makeup—and making sure it looks really, really good. And, not that she’s scrutinizing every face she sees for makeup flaws, but she does come across these four mistakes frequently.
Mistake #1: Going too light with your foundation.
“Many people tend to go too light when choosing a foundation, when in reality, it’s better to go slightly warmer,” Kashuk says. “If you are ever in between shades and unsure directionally, go with a darker shade that when blended out, looks closer to your skin tone. Going lighter almost always looks chalky and artificial or can be very aging.” To check for your correct shade, always test the color on your jawline to get a proper color read of your face and neck.

Mistake #2: Using eyelash curlers incorrectly.
This is one misstep that could be damaging. “Eyelash curlers are meant to open the eye by giving a lift to the lashes,” Kashuk says. “To get the most out of your curler, pump three times prior to mascara application. I find some women incorrectly use a curler after their mascara to ‘enhance the curl.’ This can be damaging to your lashes, as the wet mascara could make the tool grab on to your lashes and crimp, cut or even pull them out if you’re not careful.”
Mistake #3: Overdoing it with the lip liner.
With overdrawn lips becoming so popular, it is important that you maintain a bit of softness to this look so it doesn’t look too drawn or harsh. “To achieve your desired shape, overdraw slightly and then fill in the rest of your lip with the same color liner so you won’t have a harsh outline around your lip. Then, once your lip color is applied on top, use the tip of your finger to gently blend the outline of your lip to make sure everything is soft.”

Mistake #4: Not selecting the right canvas.
The word matte is used so much when it comes to makeup prep, but if you look in the mirror and your makeup just isn’t “sitting right,” it might be time to rethink what skin care you are putting on your face first. “My favorite trick for flawless skin is to start with my Radiant Boost Restorative Facial Oil. This anti-aging formula contains a blend of nine oils and just a couple of drops instantly hydrates and nourish skin, while delivering a dewy, youthful glow and prepping skin for perfect makeup application.”
