Injectable toxins are the tried-and-true way to eliminate lines and wrinkles. But some new advancements could change how doctors tackle lines and wrinkles—no needle required.
Still in development (it may not be available at doctors’ offices until 2017), this non-injectable botulinum toxin is different in that it is a topical formulation. RT001 contains a peptide technology to safely deliver large molecules, like botulinum toxin, through the skin and to the tissue for smoother skin for three to four months.
Using radio-frequency energy via a handheld probe, this product interrupts the nerve activity in muscles that cause wrinkles on the forehead. The plastic surgeons who have used this product have observed the effect to last six to 18 months. Boca Raton, FL, plastic surgeon Jason N. Pozner, MD, says, “This type of technology has more than five years of clinical data treating more than 500 patients without any serious adverse effects.”
ThermiRase heats the soft tissues and nerves to create a thermal injury to reduce the look of wrinkles. Like NeuBelle, ThermiRase requires local anesthetic to manage patient discomfort. “There is some debate as to which radio-frequency system is better. Time will tell, but the future for nontoxin alternatives is bright,” says Dr. Pozner.
