Asian women are known for their glowing, natural-looking beauty. Mostly because they have smooth, flawless skin that always looks youthful and radiant. And while we could easily chalk up their good looks to nature, it turns out that Asian women also follow strict skin-care regimens and have a few secrets up their sleeves that we can learn a lot from. That’s why we spoke with celebrity makeup artist and author of Asian Faces: The Essential Beauty and Makeup Guide for Asian Women Taylor Chang-Babaian and Pur~Lisse Skin Care Creator Jennifer Yen to find out more.
Add to your skin care routine:
While the average American woman’s skin care regimen consists of about three to four products, Chang-Babaian says that Asians use about seven. And the one product that she says we should start using is skin softener—a product similar to toner that moisturizes instead of exfoliates. “Asian skin tends to look moist—plump and moist, but not fake. The skin softeners allow serums to work better, serums allow moisturizer to work better.” One she recommends is Cle de Peau Beaute Gentle Balancing Lotion ($100).
Meditate your way to clear skin:
We’ve all heard that stress can cause damage to the skin, which might be why Yen says meditation is the key to beauty. “Chinese believe beauty is a reflection of inner health and radiance that comes from a strong, vibrant spirit, good health and plenty of rest,” she says. ” Empress Wu Zetian, a Taoist, would take time every day to close her eyes, calm herself, clear her mind and think about nothing. Banishing distracting thoughts and meditating has been an effective beauty method for centuries.”
Scrub your skin beautiful
You may have heard of Korean day spas, like Wi Spa in Los Angeles, where women spend about two hours of their time soaking in hot baths, sweating in saunas and winding down with an intense scrub down to slough off dead skin cells. The whole process leads to soft, glowing skin and the key is in the Korean exfoliating mitt or wash cloth used that is made of 100 percent viscose. “I can’t live without it,” says Chang-Babaian. Your body just doesn’t get as clean without this wash cloth. It gets that outer layer of skin off, so you force your skin to create fresh skin.”
