Let’s be completely honest: nude and pink lipstick shades are nothing short of classic, but nothing really says iconic better than a red statement lip.

And while there are tons of red lipstick shades (with a variety of different finishes and undertones!) on the market these days, celebrity makeup artist Mary Irwin explains that you’ll always want to select a product that flatters your skin tone.

“I find that the bluer the red, the more it works on almost everyone (and brightens teeth!),” Irwin explains. “An orange red is super fun on medium to dark skin tones.”
