These six products display high price tags. But do their ingredients have what it takes to command the cost?

The Wrinkle Minimizer: Orogold 24K Gold Nano Night Recovery

What Makes It So Expensive: The process of developing this unique nighttime cream, coupled with the rare ingredients in it, are reasons why this product deserves its price tag. With a high percentage of gold, specifically nano gold, which is said to be smaller in size to penetrate more efficiently into the skin, this weekly-use wrinkle reducer claims to “make skin look younger and tighter.”

What the expert says “This product is targeted toward women with deep wrinkles and poor elasticity. Because of its high percentage
of gold and peptides, which the gold accentuates the benefits of, this serum is ideal for those who feel their skin-care regimen isn’t potent enough,”
says Judy White, marketing director for Orogold.

The Smile Perfecter: Theodent 300 Toothpaste

What Makes It So Expensive: One hundred dollars for a tube of toothpaste is undeniably on the pricey side, but the unique key ingredient makes up
for it. Packed with a blend of minerals and the brand’s proprietary ingredient Rennou, which occurs naturally in cocoa beans and serves as an effective alternative to fluoride, this toothpaste, according to the company, has the ability to strengthen the enamel and make teeth healthier.

What the expert says “Cocoa beans contain trace levels of xanthine so the extraction and purification of the xanthine-based compound Rennou is extremely costly,” cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos explains.

The Age Eraser: Natura Bissé Diamond Life Infusion

What Makes It So Expensive: Taking more than three years to create in the lab, this serum breaks ground as a new skin-care category, dubbed “skin age biomarker cosmetics,” and is designed as a nightly rejuvenating treatment for women over the age of 35. While the technology and 16 state-of-the-art ingredients escalate the cost, so does
the newly discovered magnetic active, which the company says acts similarly to a retinoid sans
the effects that come along with it like sensitivity, dryness and redness.

What the expert says
“Diamond Life Infusion blends a carefully-designed combination of key actives with the latest advances in biomedical and cosmetic research that claim to regulate the four skin-aging biomarkers to rejuvenate the skin, prolong the life of the skin cells and slow skin aging,” says Michael Ann Guthrie, VP retail experience international division for Natura Bissé.

The Age-Reversing System: Valmont Time Master Intensive Program

What Makes It So Expensive: This 28-day skin-care program commands top ingredients with high concentrations (think 26 percent as opposed to the typical 5 percent). Drawing inspiration from Swiss watchmakers, the brand’s collaboration with legendary Franck Muller promises to energize, firm and hydrate skin that has lost its radiance. Anti-aging actives like hyaluronic acid, DNA and RNA liposomes and peptides in a nanotechnology emulsion help to deliver optimal penetration. Safe for all skin types, the system can even be used as a pre-surgery skin prep. boutiquevalmont.com

What the Experts Say: “Higher concentrations of active ingredients allow this product to command such a hefty price tag,” says Kelly Dobos.

The Skin Booster: 3Lab Super Cream

What Makes It So Expensive: This ultraluxe cream is laden with potent antioxidants and peptides that purportedly work deep within to improve skin tone and texture. While the ingredients count for a portion of why it’s priced so high, it’s also the industry debut of the unique X50 delivery system that allows this product to command a steep price. “We took ingredients like Swiss apple stem cells and Alpha-Melight, a brightening and whitening agent, and encapsulated them in the cream. Upon contact, they go to the problem site to rectify it,” says Erica Chung, creator and cofounder of 3Lab.

What the expert says
“The delivery system was adapted from the pharmaceutical industry, enabling medications to target diseased cells,” says Chung. “X50 costs $900,000 per kilo.”

The Lifter: Dr. Sebagh Platinum Gold Elixir

What Makes It So Expensive: The newest release from anti-aging guru Jean-Louis Sebagh, this miracle potion is inspired by the Egyptian gold thread lift technique, or the Nefertiti Lift, in which pieces of pure gold thread are placed and secured below the skin to tighten the neck and jawline. The 13 ingredients in the solution, which include 24-karat gold and platinum nanoparticles, work together and claim to provide a “lifting and firming” effect on the skin. The four-week system (Dr. Sebagh says results can be seen within the first 10 to 14 days) leaves the skin with an incandescent glow, thanks to the real flecks of gold in the product, and a more youthful appearance.

What the expert says
“I manufacture the products in my own factory and although they are effective and innovative, they are produced in smaller quantities, which accounts for a higher price point,” says Dr. Sebagh.
