Diminish Wrinkles

”This 58-year-old patient was concerned with her facial wrinkles and Dr. Zedlitz chose to perform a CO2 fractionated laser treatment. “This treatment is one of my mainstays for keeping skin looking its best, and it’s a great remedy for diminishing wrinkles without surgery,” says Dr. Zedlitz. “Not only does it help tighten, but it also improves the quality of skin left behind.  And remember, healthy skin is beautiful.”

Laser-Edged Care

One of the most impressive technological breakthroughs in the world of skin care has been highly effective lasers that can resurface, rejuvenate and refresh. Dr. Zedlitz has a vast array of lasers for her patients’ convenience, from the popular CO2 fractional laser to hair-removal devices. “We offer fractionated and complete CO2 resurfacing to diminish wrinkles, spots and sun damage along the face and chest areas. Our thorough consultations before procedures help us to analyze the skin and how it may react to treatments,” Dr. Zedlitz says. The doctor’s background in emergency care has helped her to develop a sedation technique of IM shots, oral medicine and nerve blocks that will put the patient into a comfortable state for the procedure. After the approximately 45-minute laser process, the team will cool the skin with a hand-held cooling unit and apply oxygen serums with vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants to speed up the healing process. “We use digital photography to track patients’ progress so they can see the difference,” Dr. Zedlitz says. ”We love watching patients get excited about their results. It can be very heartwarming.”

How useful are injectables?

As long as the results are natural, then injectables are a fabulous way to restore volume to an aging face or combat wrinkles. Sculptra® is a quality injectable that stimulates collagen for long-lasting results that will successfully create a youthful appearance. I never want anyone to tell when my patients have had something done. Well rested? Yes. Had work done? No! Careful placement of injections can make all of the difference, so picking the right doctor is of the utmost importance.

Rapid Wrinkle Reduction

Concerned with the deep wrinkles and uneven texture around her mouth, this 59-year-old patient turned to Dr. Zedlitz for help. “After treatment with Botox around the mouth, off-label, and CO2 skin resurfacing, her skin tone and texture dramatically improved.”

About my practice:

How do you relate to your patients?
I have tried every procedure that I offer so that I know what they are going through. If it's not effective or something that I would give myself or a family member, then I do not use it in my practice.
Has there been any great advice that you've received?
To always remember my roots. I've come from a very poor and humble background, so I am appreciative of life and the goodness that it can hold.
What new projects are you excited about?

I recently launched a new skin-care line that I want everyone to know about. For more information and updates on Zmd Skin Care Solutions, join the Zmd Community on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

About me:

Are you involved in any pro bono projects?
I give away a basket every month to a teacher, filled with beauty products, or treat them to a chemical peel or facial because the job that they do is so very important, and I want them to feel appreciated. I also do volunteer teaching at Louisiana State University.
Is there anything that you are never without?
A smile, because I am truly happy with the field of medicine that I am in. I love helping my patients to feel beautiful and thank each of them with a hand-written note.
Why did you become a dermatologist?

I love helping people feel more confident about themselves! In dermatology, there are so many modalities that give me the ability to help patients achieve their healthy skin goals. If you wake up and don’t like what you see in the mirror, that can set the tone for the day and maybe even the rest of your life. If I can change the reflection so that you like what you see, then I can help you feel empowered in your careers, relationships and friendships.

LIP ENHANCEMENT

Do people normally get both top and bottom lip enhanced?

I usually touch up both upper and lower lips.  Most patients don't need both lips done equally.  I like to keep a natural proportion of upper lip to lower lip of 1.5-2 to 3

Hair Removal Shutterstock 2602376

HAIR REMOVAL

How many treatments would I need to have in order for the hair to disappear and never grow back?

I love laser hair removal.  The number of treatments depend on your baseline hair and skin color.  The darker the hair and lighter the skin usually requires less treatments 4-6.  You generally need a yearly touch up of just one treatment.  I have seen many patients (myself included) that have only had 3-4 treatments under the arms and have never had another tx.  The guidelines say "permanent hair reduction" not removal.  The most important thing is to have an experienced laser doctor overseeing the treatments.  Many pts have had burns due to the wrong laser choice for a given skin type.  Don't go for the cheapest, it may be the most expensive in the long run.

STRETCH_MARK_Shutterstock_2983878

STRETCH MARK TREATMENTS

Are there any non invasive procedures/creams that will lighten the appearance of stretch marks?

The procedures that help with stria are fractionated 1540 laser treatments every 3-4 weeks for 5-6 treatments.  This really helps blur the edges of the scar and promote collagen synthesis. It also helps to diminish the redness from blood vessels, since it helps on 2 different areas, it is my favorite procedure for stretch marks. As far as creams go, don't believe the claims on the label.  I like to put my patients on a tretinoin cream to help with stria.  It needs to be a strength that does not cause too much irritation, this skin is fragile to start.

FAT MELTERS

Does every part of your body respond to Cool Sculpting?

I like this technology.  I have personally had it done to 3 different body areas.  If the placement is correct and there is "enough" fat to fill the suction cavity, it should work on all body parts.  That being said, not all areas are FDA approved.  You need to be careful with nerves in the area.  I would not recommend it on the face or neck.  This device works extremely well in the right person and correct body area.

I recently saw a Doctor promoting a treatment called Zerona. Can you tell me what is actually is and if it can legitimately reduce the fat?

I believe there are better alternatives.  Zeltiq, Exilis, liposuction to name a few.

ACNE TREATMENTS

Is there an alternative to Retin-A that is equally as effective?

This is a great question.  After sunscreen, tretinoin Retin-A) is the most important part of your overall skincare routine.   I have pts everyday who say they can't tolerate a retinoid (Retin-A).  They say it turned them fire red and made them dry and their skin peel.  This is soooo commonly heard that I know before I hear the answer what happened.  The irritation is usually due to a concentration that was too high for their skin.  I have been using it for 10 years and still can only tolerate the lowest strength 3 times a week.  That's OK.  I alternate with something else like glycolic acid cream.

chemical_peels_NB25IWSKINpf

CHEMICAL PEELS

Can you tell me what a Jesner peel is and exactly how it differs from other peels that are more commonly talked about?

Jessner's solution has been used for over 100 hundred years.  A Jessner's peel is a combination of different acids to make for a superficial peel.  It contains lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol in an alcohol base.  I love this peel as part of a maintenance regimin. I like it for all skin types. Many of my acne patients are on these. I like to jump start things with a series of 3 peels 3 weeks apart.

For optimum results, how often should I get a chemical peel?

I recommend chemical peels quite often.  I think chemical peels are a underutilized as a way to keep your skin looking its best.  I love superficial peels once a month. The type of peeling agent depends on your skin type, dryer skin-glycolic, oily skin-salicylic.

Injectables & Fillers

INJECTABLES AND FILLERS

What injectable is most commonly used for lip injections?

I love to inject lips.  I love to see lips that are natural.  Too many times these two sentences are not compatible.  My motto is "less is more".  If you can tell you've had something done, I haven't done my job.  That being said, I like the HA class of fillers -Juvederm Ultra and Restylane.  I dillute them depending on what I am trying to accomplish,- defining the vermillion border, rebuilding the phitrum (2 vertical lines between the nose and top lip), or overall volumizing. I have turned patients away because they wanted an unnatural look.  I first try to educate them and let them know my goals are for them to look rested, not "done".

What is the difference between Perlane and other fillers that are being offered by Doctors?

Perlane is a filler from the HA (Hyaluronic Acid) class.  The fillers in the class are reversible.  I like these fillers for a pt having them done for the first time.  It is always good to have options, and reversibility is nice. Perlane is a filler that has a higher viscosity. This allows us to use it for structure or "scaffolding" of the face.  It allows for more robust volumization when structure is lacking - loss of bone.

As long as the results are natural, then injectables are a fabulous way to restore volume to an aging face or combat wrinkles. Sculptra is a quality injectable that stimulates collagen for long-lasting results that will successfully create a youthful appearance. Dr. Zedlitz - Acne Tips: How Much Does It Cost To Treat Acne?
Dr. Ann Zedlitz
Acne can be very costly to treat, but it doesn't have to be. It depends on what kind of acne you have: mild, moderate or scarring. Scarring acne can be expensive to treat, it usually requires a visit to the dermatologist and prescription medication. If you don't treat it when it's scarring you're going to be paying to treat the scars later. So whatever the cost, it's worth it!

Dr. Zedlitz - Anti Aging Tip: Does Pollution Damage My Skin?
Dr. Ann Zedlitz
Does pollution make me look older? There are many environmental stressers that effect our skin. Stress is bad on our skin stress causes inflammation. So environmental stressers such as smoke and ultra violent light ages our skin. There are many products that we can place topically on our skin called antioxidants that help reverse that damage. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are good antioxidants to look for.

Dr. Zedlitz - Anti Aging Tips: How To Maintain Skin Elasticity
Dr. Ann Zedlitz
Elasticity in our skin leaves us as we age as well as the collagen. This is a direct reflection of the amount of sun that we've gotten during our lifetime. The sun breaks down collagen and decreases our elasticity and that's what makes our skin sag. So if you want to age more gracefully lower the amount of sun exposure you get and wear your sunscreen!
