"Liquid Facelift"

“This 41-year-old woman, who is shown at 35 years old in the before photograph, received progressive rejuvenation with just facial fillers, sculpted artistically with a no-needle technique. She appears much younger now than she did at 35, and both photos are shown with makeup.”

Unique Filler Techniques

In addition to paying attention to factors such as shape, balance, proportion and lateral volume when performing filler treatments to create a natural-looking result, Dr. Lam uses techniques that ensure patient comfort and minimal bruising. Incorporating tiny specialized micro cannulas and accupressure-like vibrational techniques, Dr. Lam is able to distract the nerves and perform injections with virtually no discomfort. “It’s a special acuvibrational finger technique that is hard to believe unless you’ve tried it,” he says. “I don’t want my patients to suffer needlessly, so I do whatever I can to ensure their visit is as pleasant as possible. I also use the KTP laser to minimize bruising on any patients who do happen to get them.”

Philosophy

In practice for nearly 10 years, 43-year-old Dr. Samuel M. Lam puts patient comfort first with gentle techniques that minimize pain and downtime. “Patients fly in from all over the world just to get injectable treatments from me,” he says. The international lecturer and author of six books, including Complementary Fat Grafting, is double board certified in head and neck surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Lam is also fellowship trained in facial plastic surgery to enhance his exclusive focus on aesthetics from the neck up.

Skillful Subtlety

Desiring a more youthful and less tired appearance, this 55-year-old patient turned to Dr. Lam for help. “She wanted a noninvasive solution so I recommended fat grafting, which offers long-lasting results,” Dr. Lam says. After a full-face fat transfer, she looks more awake and subtly rejuvenated overall, all without undergoing any incisions.

Restoring Hair Loss

This 66-year-old female patient suffered from hair loss and turned to Dr. Lam for help. Dr. Lam chose to perform a hair transplant surgery in order to restore the patient’s natural volume in a realistic hair pattern.

Volume Enhancer

Seeking subtle facial rejuvenation to combat the signs of facial aging, this 55-year-old patient underwent a full-face fat transfer procedure with Dr. Lam. “With fat grafting, we were able to counteract her volume loss to give her a long-lasting, youthful look,” Dr. Lam says.

Hair rejuvenation

When a woman’s hair starts to vanish, the self-esteem can be damaged. “It’s common to feel ashamed to talk about it and seek solutions,” says Dr. Lam. “I feel passionate about hair restoration to give them back their femininity and identity.” In addition to female hair transplants, Dr. Lam performs many male hair transplants as well. “My techniques are gender specific because male and female hair loss patterns are fundamental opposites, and it requires a careful eye to know and respect those differences,” Dr. Lam says. “For women, I pay attention to the cowlick, shape and how they part their hair to create the maximum benefit for hair placement.” Hair loss isn’t the only thing Dr. Lam treats. Those born with a high hairline can receive hair transplants to give the appearance of a smaller forehead.

This 35-year-old patient appears prematurely aged due to excessive sun damage. “She has undergone multiple syringes of fillers to restore volume in a natural way along with Botox® and skin therapies to improve the overall glow and shape to her face,” says Dr. Lam.

About my practice:

What is your approach to cosmetic enhancement?

My approach is artistic. Most physicians are mechanics and use the left brain too much. I pay attention to the aesthetic character of each individual based on proportion, shape and balance. My goal is to give patients painless, incisionless options that provide a natural look.

How do you ensure safety for your patients?
I operate in a Joint Commission-accredited surgical suite on-site.

Tell us about your new skin-care line.

With fat grafting, stem cells benefit the skin from the inside out so I sought to compliment that with stem-cell enhanced topical products that benefit skin from the outside in. My line is called OVA, and it's easy to use. Infused with stem cells derived from plants (such as argan tree and Swiss apple) that are resistant to aging, the line is made up of a facial cleanser, morning cream and night cream. That's it, and it's all you need to boost the appearance and quality of the skin. For more information, visit ova-skin.com.

What new technology have you introduced at your practice?

To provide my patients with the utmost accuracy and precision in hair restoration, I’ve recently added the ARTAS® System, which uses sophisticated imaging technology to harvest follicular units. A robotic arm is able to pinpoint the location of each follicular unit on the scalp and target it for dissection with more precision than a physician’s hand. It is efficient and consistent in delivering healthy, quality grafts with nearly undetectable harvest sites. The device is also user-friendly and helps simplify the operation for the physician.

About me:

What are you passionate about outside of plastic surgery?
I love art, and I don't shy away from opportunities to be involved with it. I personally did all the illustrations for my books and paintings in my office.
What makes your practice distinct?
I am double board certified and focus exclusively on the head and neck.
How are you a leader?

I’m a world lecturer on fat grafting techniques. I am lecturing in Norway, Iran, Las Vegas, St. Louis, New Orleans, San Francisco and Atlanta this year.

What organizations are you affiliated with?
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American College of Surgeons and The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

HAIR-LOSS TREATMENT

Please help my mom - Are there any true solutions for hair loss that do not include surgery?

Besides surgery, minoxidil (Rogaine) can be very helpful to stabilize or slow down and somewhat regrow some hair loss.  Also, I have been using PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections that have also helped a lot especially in women.  However, nothing substitutes for a good hair transplant.  The problem though is that if you have a hair transplant it takes 4 to 6 months to start growing and in the interim you can have a lot more shedding, which is not good if a wedding is planned during that interval.

Also, any female that is having hair loss should always be investigated for causes of hair loss.  In women after menopause the most common reason is male hormone imbalance and low thyroid.  In younger women, a heavy menses (menstruation) can lead to low iron which is the most common cause of hair loss that can be corrected.  Seeing a dermatologist is not a bad idea who can both screen for blood work and do a scalp analysis to make sure that there is nothing else weird going on like lupus or a scarring condition.

Perhaps the most overlooked solutions for temporary camouflage are wigs, hair extensions (which sometimes could pull on the hair and make things worse by the way), and topical products like Nanogen, Toppik, and DermMatch that can cover areas of baldness by using fibers (for the first two) and a shoe polish type (for the latter).  Hope that helps.

Injectables & Fillers

INJECTABLES AND FILLERS

I'd like to grow my eyebrows back to their former fullness. Has a laser been invented that helps with hair growth?

Lasers do help with hair growth if you have early loss so in eyebrow hair loss it may be inadequate.  Using Latisse may help thicken your existing eyebrows to make them look thicker, which could be the simplest solution.  Also, injecting PRP/Acell into them can help but I typically only use platelet rich plasma (PRP) in conjunction with eyebrow hair transplants, which can be extremely natural when done well.  It is always wise to check if there is a hormonal component like low thyroid that can worsen or cause the hair loss.  Finally, natural scalp micropigmentation (hair tattooing) can help so long as they are done with little strokes by an artistic individual rather than the traditional Groucho marx look that we are accustomed to seeing.
