When it comes to achieving results in record time, ultra-thin, or prepless veneers help rework misshaped teeth, and they do away with chips, cracks and discoloration. I use these contact lens-thin veneers to close gaps and fix misaligned teeth, improving patients' smiles. They look natural and don't require a drill or the administration of shots to put them on, which are aspects of the procedure patients particularly like, says Dr. Horst, who also points out that ultra-thin veneers can help revitalize old dental work and don't always require the removal of tooth structure. What does a consultation with you involve?

Every one of my patients gets a thorough exam, an in-depth smile analysis, as well as a set of digital photos and digital X-rays that use about 90 percent less radiation than traditional X-rays.

The computer imaging program at my practice allows patients to preview their new smiles prior to treatment. Together, we can change the color and shape of the teeth and the gum line, on screen, before treatment. As part of the decision- making process, I also educate patients by showing them my before-and-after album that I made with the help of my daughter.

Why do you describe your dental practice as all-inclusive?

We offer treatments such as porcelain veneers, ceramic crowns, dental implants, whitening and prophylactic cleanings. Also, beautiful smiles come from healthy smiles so we provide comprehensive testing from oral cancer screenings to DNA salivary testing to determine the health of your mouth, as well as oral probiotics to help regulate the mouth’s good and bad bacteria. To further enhance the experience, I offer patients earphones with a choice of music for them to listen to. Patients can also watch streaming TV shows and movies with Netflix via iPad and digital eyewear during their procedures.

TEETH WHITENING

What is the most effective way to whiten teeth?

Teeth whitening epends on the patient. Zoom and Sapphire are one-hour, in-office tooth-whitening procedures. They are different products and use different laser lights to activate the lightening gel.

Are at home treatments effective for teeth whitening?

Patients can use custom trays to whiten teeth at home, or to touch up teeth that were whitened by other treatments.

What is the best teeth whitening product for sensitive teeth?

If you have tooth sensitivity, then the Sapphire laser light is the best. It is designed to prevent sensitivity.

What about teeth whitening toothpastes? Do they work?

Yes, some do. I like the Supersmile system by Dr. Smigel. The one that has both the accelerator and the toothpaste works well.

SMILE MAKEOVER

What is gum dermabrasion?

It's just like what they use for the skin. Sometimes the gum has pigment so we dermabrade to make the gums more pink.

What are dental implants?

If you have missing teeth due to trauma, periodontal disease or failed root canals, we use an implant.

What is a 'smile makeover and what does it involve?

When you want to make-over your smile we can do different things, like tooth whitening, fixing the teeth, gums, etc.

What is a gum lift?

If you have a gummy smile, a lot of gum with no teeth showing, we can remove part of the gum so you can see more of the teeth. This can be done with a laser, but sometimes the patient needs surgery by a special surgeon. They can also cut the bone and can lower the upper lip.

What is tooth contouring?

If your teeth have a square shape and you want them more round, or if you have chips, we contour the teeth by using a special sanding disc on a slow drill. We can also fix eyeteeth that are too sharp and make them smooth.

When is a crown used?

A crown is used when there is a large filling that's failing, broken teeth, or to correct a root canal. It can also be used on teeth that are ground down. There are all different kinds--porcelain, metal, gold--depending on aesthetic function.

What is the difference between bonding and veneers? What do they correct? When should each be used?

Veneers are porcelain. Bonding is done with composite resign which stains over time. With veeners, you need the whole tooth covered. If it's just a corner that needs to be fixed, we can do bonding, but it will stain over time. With veneers, we usually do it in two steps or visits and have to shave down the original tooth.

BRACES

Can I fix my crooked smile without braces?

You can fix your teeth with the Invisalign system, which moves teeth with trays--and with veneers. It depends on the patient.

Does Invisalign work as well as traditional braces?

The new generation of Invisalign (generation 4) promises a lot more improvement with what we can do for teeth. It was excellent before, and now it's even better.

How has the technology of traditional braces improved the years?

Traditional braces have improved. With SureSmile, orthodontists can move wires with computers so you get faster results. And brackets are better, now, too.

What is ClearCorrect and how does it straighten teeth?

It is like Invisalign, clear braces. It's just a different brand.

Why choose Invisalign over traditional braces?

They are removable so it looks much better, and cleaner. You won't have food stuck in your braces and you don't look like a teenager. It's also faster. We can move the teeth every two weeks with Invisalign, rather than every 4-6 weeks. We can also move one tooth at a time.

What are the disadvantages of Invisalign?

There are limitations to what we can do with the open bite to bring the teeth down. There is less predictable movement.
