Being Acknowledged For Who You Are

This 48-year-old patient was born with misaligned teeth, and as a result she had a lot of plaque, tartar and staining accumulation. Invisalign® gave her a profound transformation of beauty and health. “Now she can eat and chew with freedom, and the first thing you notice when you see her is a beautiful, healthy smile,” says Dr. Hamsayeh.

Rejuvenating Replacement

Missing her four front teeth since she was 8, this 32-year-old patient had been using an unsightly denture to fill the space. Previous attempts for bone grafting and dental implants had failed. However in four visits over two months, Dr. Hamsayeh gave her the smile of her dreams with the combination of a bridge and veneers.

Philosophy

Patients have been known to travel from near and far to visit Dr. Niloufer G. Hamsayeh. Clients fly in from London, ireland and Japan, as well as from many U.S. locations. Is it any wonder? Her specialized knowledge, finely-crafted technique and over 20 years of experience contribute to her ability to create the right dental fitness program for her patients’ specific requirements. “the essence of my program is relationship-oriented—a two-way street where we are both working to support your optimal health. In my office, the patient is the ‘master of their own mouth,’”says Dr. Hamsayeh.

Event-Ready Aesthetic

Unhappy with her cracked, worn and yellow teeth, this 54-year-old patient finally took action in preparation for a special event. With a shorter time frame to work with, the patient didn’t want to do orthodontic treatment, which alone would not have been enough to fix her smile. “By using a combination of techniques, in just three visits, I was able to give her the smile she has always wanted,” Dr. Hamsayeh says.

High-Tech Treatments

“Being technologically advanced and privy to new equipment allows me to offer a variety of options to my patients,” says Dr. Hamsayeh. Aware that time is of the essence with many patients, she is pleased to offer CEREC® technology that enables her to perform single-treatment crown and veneer procedures. “We are distinctive because we are constantly evolving our techniques and services. During treatment, patients can watch a movie while the CEREC® machine turns what used to be a multi-visit treatment into a short, single visit.” Also available at Dr. Hamsayeh’s practice are cutting-edge dental lasers. “I incorporate lasers into my procedures to help reduce post-treatment discomfort, minimize the risk of infection and help aid in the restoration of new, beautiful smiles,” says Dr. Hamsayeh, who most recently added oral sedation to her selection of services. “Patients can pop just one pill and sleep while I get to work on making their smiles more glamorous. When they awake, they have no recollection of the experience—only the fact that they now have a sexier smile.”

About my practice:

What innovative services do you offer?

I perform laser gum contouring, whereby I use a laser to redefine the outline of patients’ teeth, in addition to state-of-the-art dental implant procedures.

What is your goal for each patient you treat?

My goal is to help people keep their own teeth, for life.

Why is it so important for patients to care for their smiles?
A smile is one of the first things people notice about you. A beautiful, healthy mouth leads to improved self- confidence, giving you the courage to start a conversation, smile more and be more outgoing.

About me:

Which awards mean the most to you?
I received the 2010 Bay Area Top Doctors & Dentists award, and therefore got to appear on NBC Bay Area television's doctors improving healthcare show. It was a very memorable moment.
What is your favorite part of your job?

I love sharing in the “Wow I look great!” moment every time a client looks at what we’ve done with their teeth. I am a steward of dental health; I treat my client’s teeth like I treat my own and maintain their beautiful smile.

In what way is less more?
I have always believed that less can be more, and therefore employ a very conservative approach to restoring the smile. In particular, Invisialign is a great way to shift the teeth into proper alignment, without using metal braces, which can be uncom- fortable and interrupting to one's daily lifestyle. In terms of veneers, i offer a 'no-prep' alternative to conventional restorations, so as to avoid filing down the teeth. Above all else, my goal is for patients to look natural, with teeth that look like they belong. With my approach, there's no reason every- body can't have a beautiful smile. We're all deserving and it's within everyone's reach.

TEETH WHITENING

Who is the best candidate for Sensational Smiles?

Honestly, anyone with tetracycline staining, deep hard staining, or anyone with defects in their enamel wouldn’t be candidate for this, but they can use other processes.

Will whitening the teeth cause tooth sensitivity?

With the Sensational Smiles system, the way the material is activated doesn’t dry out the teeth or open the tubules on the teeth so we can use it on super sensitive people.

Do over-the-counter whitening strips work?

I’ve seen them work on some patients, but it takes a long while for them to work so the patients have to keep using them which gets pretty expensive. It does work on patients with bigger or longer teeth. They are inconvenient, but if it works for you, and you don’t mind spending money, it’s an option.

What is the best way to whiten teeth?

I used to use Sapphire for whitening, but have switched over to a 20 minute process called Sensational Smiles—a 20 minute in-office whitening process that’s really inexpensive (it’s under $200). The patient has their teeth cleaned, applies a little vitamin E to their lips, puts on protective goggles and gets a snooba (a tray designed after a snorkel) that is impregnated with whitening material. It uses a light to activate the product that does not emit UV rays, so it does not over-dry the teeth which is healthier. The light is very localized.  A Timer goes off and they rinse and go.  The patient then gets a brush-style applicator to use for 10 days at home to brush on their teeth at night. They stick the tray in their mouth for 20 minutes, to make sure it stays on their teeth, and then they spit it out and go to bed.  Patients must stay away from dark liquids for a week or so. It’s amazing and can be used on supersensitive patients because there is no soft tissue damage because there is no UV light. The process gets teeth 5 to 16 shades lighter, depending on your teeth. The nice part about this process is that you can come in for a cleaning, stay for 20 minutes afterwards and leave with really white teeth because there is no waiting for custom trays; and you can keep it up every 6 months.

Is in-office bleaching more effective than at-home custom whitening treatments?

In-office, we can use a much stronger bleach. It’s actually the strength or concentration of the bleach that whitens the teeth, not the laser. The laser just heats up the bleach, which may make it a little more efficient. Over -the-counter products can only contain a 7 percent concentration; we give 10 to 16 percent to take home and use 45 percent in-office.

SMILE MAKEOVER

What are crowns and when are they used? Do you need to alter my natural teeth?

Crowns are used when you have a large area of the tooth that’s compromised in structure (more than half the tooth). They help provide circumferential support of the tooth, and are used as a protective coating for brittleness and cracking in the teeth after root canals.

What is the difference between bonding and veneers? What are they used for?

They are a nice way to fix chipped teeth non-invasively; however, bonding can’t fix teeth with vertical fractures in them.  Bonding is a less permanent way to fix the teeth, you usually only get 3 to 5 years with them, but it’s a quick fix with one dental visit. Veneers are now thin and can last from 5 to 20 years, so they are a more of a permanent solution and provide a more protective structure for teeth because it covers the whole tooth so the nerves are protected.  Bonding does stain where veneers don’t.

What are dental implants and when are they used?

Implants are the best solution to any sort of space or gap in the mouth. They are a natural replacement for your own tooth, and they don’t compromise the structure or integrity of the teeth next to them.  Just like your own teeth, you can brush and floss like you would normally do. You have to have adequate bone. We do a 3D scan and determine the placement for the implant, if everything is normal, than it’s a one- to two-step appt. But, if the patient doesn’t have enough bone, than they need a healing period of 4 to 6 months for a bone graft of their own bone (from the mandible or chin) or an artificial bone (the artificial graft takes 6 months to a year). After that, it takes a couple of visits.

BRACES

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

They best candidates are those that have a narrow arch with lots of crowding, or those who have a wide arch with lots of spacing; but that doesn’t eliminate others from being good candidates. It’s case by case. We take impressions, send them off and evaluate. Most adults can do it. It takes anywhere from 6 to 18 months for results, depending on how big the problem is. They now have new technology where they are placing better attachments and memory in the tray themselves which is shortening treatment time.

VENEERS

How are veneers put on? Do you need to alter my natural teeth?

Altering the teeth is not necessary in all cases. How we prepare the teeth depends on how much room there is, how they fit together and inclination of the teeth. Depending on what lab is used, it usually take a two to three  appointments, so  it can take a week to three weeks, based  on what the patient is having done. Typically, we see about a one week turnaround, with two office visits. But you can pay a rush fee and get them quicker.
