A-List celebrities constantly rely on a team of top hairstylists, which makes every day seem like a good hair day. From intricate updos to polished curls, getting every angle of a red-carpet look down pat (so it looks as it should from the front, sides and back) may be easier than you think—if you arm yourself with the right products, tips and in some cases, the help of another set of hands.
Sultry Heidi Braids
Braids are definitely making a comeback and they can be worn in a way that makes them completely suitable for night, as well as day.
Step 1: Make the Braid
Celebrity stylist Enzo Angileri parted Charlize’s hair on the right side and made a braid at the nape of the neck. “I made the first braid gradually larger and looser as it reached the opposite side and secured it with a pin,” he says.
Step 2: Double Up
Next, Angileri took the remaining hair and created another thin braid just above the first one. The two braids were then directed toward the left ear. Once the braids were complete, Angileri twisted them together in a round, low bun and pinned them.
Step 3: Bring it All Together
“I made sure to keep the shape generous and flowing and positioned the bun so it would look intriguing from every angle,” he says. To finish the look, a light mist of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine was used to add luminosity.
How to Prep the Hair
Wash well: To get Charlize Theron’s strands ready for her braids, Angileri first cleansed her hair with a volumizing shampoo. John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Shampoo, johnfrieda.com
Heat protection: Next, Angileri worked a smoothing oil through her hair to give it healthy shine. “Smoothing products help protect her naturally wavy hair from the heat of the blow-dryer while it’s brushed straight,” he says. It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin, itsa10haircare.com
Lock it in: To keep flyaways in check, give your style a spritz using a firm yet flexible hold hairspray, like Borghese Siena Finishing Hair Spray, borghese.com
The Modern “Farrah” Flip
Long layers that flip up and out are just as in demand today as they were in their heyday. Today’s style is modern and less feathery and works with ombré hair color perfectly.
Step 1: The Blowout
Salma Hayek’s stylist, Robert Vetica, divided her hair into four sections (two in the back, two in the front) and blow-dried it with a large, round brush. “Start with the back sections—the hair is thickest there—with a 3-inch by 2-inch section. Begin at the bottom of the hair working your way away from the face.” Repeat for the whole head.
Step 2: Set and Roll
Once hair is completely dried, Vetica says to take five Velcro rollers and roll big sections of the hair around them. Before the rollers are removed, spray hair with hairspray and give it a quick blast of heat and leave in for a few minutes. “When the hair is cool, take them out and lightly run your fingers through your hair.”
How to Prep the Hair
Get a good cut: You'll need the right haircut to achieve this sexy, modern look. As Vetica explains, a good cut with long layers (he says the cut looks good on almost everyone), is a great change for anyone with all one-length hair who wants a new style, but doesn’t want to lose the length. “The layers should always start at the chin.”
Natural looking color: A good cut is only part of the equation to beautiful hair. The other half: skin flattering color that looks natural. Salma’s golden highlights add a punch of healthy color and complement her complexion.

The Chic High Bun
Step 1: Add Texture
Gather hair into a high ponytail at the top of the crown. “If the hair is too straight it will not bend. Set the pony on hot rollers or curl for movement,” says celebrity stylist Paula Ivins Kingston of Lucid Salon. Spray loose hairs and smooth back.
Step 2: Wrap it Up
Section the underneath third of the ponytail and wrap it around the base of the pony, securing it underneath the base with a bobby pin. Next, Kingston says to back-comb the remaining ponytail to create a base and lightly brush the top of the pony to smooth with the other hand.
Step 3: Fan it Out
Place another rubberband at the bottom of the pony near the base of the hairline. “Tuck the bottom rubberband up and under and pin while fanning the pony to the sides. Finish with a sheer dry oil,” says Kingston.
Tips for Recreating This Look at Home
Go High: Start by pulling your hair into a high ponytail and smoothing the sides, top and underneath so there are no bumps or strays sticking out.
Split Into Two: Next, take the pony and loosely wrap it around the base. Secure the bun with bobby pins.
Set It: For a wider bun, like Sarah Jessica Parker’s, gently pull the hair outward. Finish with a light spray of hairspray to lock the style in place

Elegant and Side Swept
Not all ultraglam styles have to be perfectly coiffed and predictable looking. In fact, celebrity stylist Rod Ortega, who created this look, says that a deconstructed style is sophisticated for a big night out.
Step 1: Wave Maker
Starting with already smooth hair, Ortega used a 1-inch curling iron to create soft curls. “Start from the middle of the hair and work your way down to the ends selecting random pieces to give a little bit of bend plus texture,” he explains.
Step 2: Unexpected Twist
“I blew the bangs to the side and, using that same round brush, I brushed out Stacy’s curls with her head upside down. That really gives it that sexy messed-up look.”
Step 3: Set It
Before the look is “sculpted,” spray with a finishing hairspray. Wrap and twist the hair into a circle (not a bun), letting some pieces fall out, and pin into place with matte bobby pins. More hairspray gives hold so the look remains elegant yet sleek.
How to Prep the Hair
Bump up the volume: Before Ortega started styling Stacy Keibler’s strands, he worked a light alcohol-free volumizer into her hair.
Build body: Next, Ortega began to blowdry Stacy’s hair using the T3 Featherweight Luxe Dryer with a diffuser. “Using a diffuser really helps to build body without pulling any of the texture out of the hair. And it also works well for fighting frizz,” he says. sephora.com
Smooth it out: To smooth the hair, Ortega used a 1.5-inch round brush to soften the hair and even out the ends. HairArt Products Ceramic Barrel Brush, hairartproducts.com
