LIPOSUCTION - WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE
Liposuction is not a weight-loss alternative. It is a treatment for pockets
of fat resulting from heredity and aging that are unaffected by weight loss
and exercise. You can consider yourself a good candidate for liposuction to
reshape those pockets, bulges and overhangs if:
- You are within 30 percent of the ideal body weight for your height and frame
- You are generally healthy and physically active
- You don't have health conditions that can put you at risk for poor healing and serious complications, such as lupus, diabetes or chronic blood or heart disease
While age is not a major consideration, older patients generally have less
skin elasticity. The key to spectacular results with liposuction is good
skin tone. Therefore the best candidates have good skin
with healthy elasticity.
Following liposuction, the skin must mold itself to your new contours. If
it does not, the resulting loose and droopy skin can be unattractive. If your
skin lacks elasticity, a
bodylift
or
abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) in addition
to liposuction may be an option. Board-certified plastic surgeons are among
the appropriate providers of liposuction, but they are the only appropriately
trained choice of surgeon if liposuction is accompanied by a tummy tuck, bodylift
or other body-sculpting surgery.
